Switched at Birth
How can I visually represent the This American Life episode, Switched at Birth? The story entailed the switching of two baby girls in a rural Kansas hospital in the early 1950's, and the deceit, reflections, and, ultimately, the resolutions that ensue.
My final product was a hand-bound, linen, hard-cover-bound book measuring 6 inches in width and 8 inches in height, containing 10 french-fold spreads. As far as the aesthetic of the final product, I strove for something that would feel and look nostalgic and delicate, almost like a memory album that might have been assembled by one of the characters themselves. The photographs used are either vintage photography, or photographs I took myself of souvenirs and family imagery. As another level of user-interaction, I included multiple movable photographs inset on top of printed images, which allows the reader to move variables, customizing the story just as the parents in the podcast alter the lives of the women in question.
One of the most immediate problems I faced in this execution was how to convey the voices of the many different speakers within the podcast in a logical way. What I landed on was an organization system wherein each speaker was assigned a unique color and a column space.
